Headline
Head of UNMISS Visits Cluster Munition Clearance Site in South Sudan
Caption Description
David Shearer, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for South Sudan and Head of United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), led a delegation with representatives from the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), the Government of Japan, and the National Mine Action Authority of South Sudan, to visit a cluster munition clearance site in Amee, in South Sudan. UNMAS humanitarian mine action teams, funded by Japan, have been surveying and clearing a large agricultural area near the Juba Nimule road to ensure that people can safely access humanitarian assistance and resume their daily livelihoods. The Nimule road is the main road for returnees from Uganda.
UNMAS and its implementing partner MAG (Mines Advisory Group) demonstrated the clearance and disposal of cluster munition and mechanical ground preparation.
