Caption Description
A plan of operation providing for expanded activity by the Latin American Demographic Centre (CELADE) in Santiago, Chile, with costs shared by 12 Governments of the region and the UN Development Programme (UNDP), was signed at UN Headquarters today. The Demographic Centre carries out training, research and advisory services in the population field. The 12 Governments which will co-operate with the UNDP in the $2.3 million, five-year project under the plan of operation, are Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru and Venezuela. The Latin American Demographic Centre was established in 1957 through an agreement between the Government of Chile and the United Nations, and a sub-center has been set up at San Jose, Costa Rica. The UN will serve as executive agency.
