The Second General Conference of the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) was inaugurated in Lima today and will continue until 26 March. The President of Peru, General Juan Velasco Alvarado, was unable to attend the inauguration and his speech was read by the Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, General Francisco Morales Bermudez. Rear Admiral Alberto Jimenez de Lucio presided. Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim addressed the inaugural meeting, and the Minister of Industry and Environment of Senegal, Louis Alexanderenne, spoke on behalf of the delegations present. Messages were received from Pope Paul VI and President Nicolae Ceaucescu of Romania. At the first plenary meeting Rear Admiral Jimenez, Minister for Industry and Tourism of Peru, was elected President of the Conference by acclamation. Representative of 104 countries attended the opening day’s meetings.
Dr. Abd-El Rahman Khane, UNIDO’s Executive Director, speaking before the plenary of the II General Conference. Seated at the presiding table, at centre, are the Peruvian Minister of the Industry and Tourism, Rear Admiral Alberto Jimenez de Lucio, and Secretary-General Waldheim.
