Committee on Peace-Keeping Operations Begins 1971 Work; Hears Secretary-General, Agrees on Officers
Caption Description
The Special Committee on Peace-Keeping Operations, meeting this afternoon for the first time in 1971, began consideration of its work for the year. Following statements by members, the 33-member Committee agreed to meet again later this month. Secretary-General U Thant, who opened the meeting, noted that consultations were continuing for the election of a new Chairman of the Committee to succeed Francisco Cuevas Cancino (Mexico), who was transferred to another assignment by his Government late in 1970.
A partial view of the Committee in session today as George Bush, Permanent Representative of USA to UN (4th from left), addresses the meeting.
